Review: Her Scandalous Suitor

Her Scandalous Suitor

A chance meeting...or so she thought. Is confidence trickster Will Samson the hero he claims to be or someone else entirely...

Emily Darson assumed her future of propriety and privilege amid a loveless marriage was set in stone. At least, she did until confidence trickster Will Samson came into her life...

Then everything changed.

With each revelation about her fiancé and herself that Will uncovers, he also reveals a little more of who is he, what he has suffered, and the volatile vengeance that burns in his heart.

Can Emily really risk security for scandal? Loyalty for love? Only time will tell…

Review

What a delightful book! I am a sucker for any author that can twist a trope and Ms. Bramble does so right out of the gate. We are introduced to a would-be seductor analyzing his prey….without realizing he has completely misread the situation. It was a powerful hook. I couldn’t wait to see what happened when he would realize his mistake. I was treated to a fun romp of a story set in a beloved time period.

I’m very much in awe of Ms. Brimble’s ability to create living, breathing characters within moments of presentation. There were little bits of humor, small pieces of description, or singular acts that established the characters perfectly in their environment. I was in love with a few of them before I knew their names! There was nuance to each one that is often missing in romance literature. These characters had flaws and ambiguity that made them whole.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all readers of the genre.  You will delight in the twists and love the characters as much as I have. So find a warm blanket, grab a warm beverage and tuck into a wonderful historical romance.

Review - When We Were Us

When We Were Us

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that will warm your heart! Perfect for fans of Mhairi McFarlane, Marian Keyes, Kathleen Whyman and Caroline James.

Is it ever too late to start again…?

Erika Forde has always played second fiddle to her husband David, the famous novelist. But since their son, Matt, left home for university, cracks have started to show in their marriage.

Erika has long had a nagging suspicion that David may not always have been faithful, and now his latest books are starting to wane in popularity causing erratic moods that are affecting Erika.

But while David’s career starts to dip, Erika’s advertising agency is on the up.

Erika’s creative genius wins the agency a huge client in Stable Denim, but her life is thrown into turmoil when one of the models cast for the campaign turns out to be her ex-boyfriend, Enzo.

Has Enzo been sent back into Erika’s life for a reason? Is it time for her to reevaluate her marriage?

Or should some things be left in the past…?

WHEN WE WERE US is a second chance love story, that shows the ups and downs of family life with buckets of humour and wit.

Review -

The book started on a very relatable conversation for any would-be author - how to be inclusive without being disingenuous. It went on to be relatable as a wife who feels more like an appliance than a person wonders what happened to her love story and why her child is such a terrible person. Then it coalesced as a relevant commentary on the American culture wars and the unintended consequences of gentle parenting. There was a lot going on for what was, ultimately, an easy afternoon of reading.

The novel follows Erika on the path out of her marriage and into the arms of her long-lost first love. It’s a sweet fantasy-made-reality for many women who feel that their marriage has lost its shine and that young love is the truest love. There was some strong language and quite a bit of bad-mouthing marriage which lessened the romance for me but won’t for most people. Everyone was happily enjoying their sexual partnerships at the end of the book, as promised.

I’m afraid that Erika’s snark may have followed me into this review. I have to praise the author for strength of voice. Erika felt very real, very funny and very modern. Erika has aged like Parmesan - a slightly smelly food that’s never quite “the rage” but adds just the right tang to every plate. She was a fun way to spend a few hours.

Author Bio

Patricia Caliskan's latest novel, WHEN WE WERE US, will be released in February 2024.

GIRLFRIEND, INTERRUPTED, was released by Sapere Books, June 2018.

Her debut novel, AWFUL BY COMPARISON, was released in August 2016.

Told with mischievous humour, Patricia Caliskan’s stories explore family dynamics, office politics, and the divergent roles of women throughout their lives.

Patricia began her writing career as an arts and entertainment journalist, before joining Reach PLC as commercial editor across a portfolio of magazine titles.

Patricia likes a nice, flouncy scarf, a good pair of boots, and laughter. Lots of laughter. Otherwise life feels far too grown-up for her liking.

Review - Dual Devotions Review

This review was made possible by the lovely people at Covenant Communications. Thank you for allowing me to have a pre-release copy for review.

Charlotte is willing to risk everything to be with Alex; her brother will stop at nothing to tear them apart.

Review

The best part about this book was the reversal of fortunes aspect. The heroine is wealthy, surrounded by suitors, and supported by family despite an ongoing argument with her brother about what’s best for her life. The hero, however, has everything against him. He is struggling to regain any footing in society after his father’s scandal. He is poor, alone, and ignored. Yet the two are drawn together over and over again. The book burns with forbidden love, although it is occasionally too dependent on romantic tropes. What it might lack in originality, it makes up for in likability. The author takes a kindly look at all her characters. Their struggles are relevant to their situations. The drama makes sense in the situation. Everyone earns their happy endings or their consequences. It’s a lovely, charming novel that will certainly please the abundant fans of the genre.

About the author
Sarah L. McConkie started her writing career in the second grade with a thirteen-page magnum opus about dinosaurs. Although the plotline and penmanship lacked polish, Sarah learned she loved retiring to bed thinking of stories. On a good night, she still does the same thing. She took up the pen several years later after tucking her own little dreamer into bed and now combines modern-life experiences, a robust knowledge of historical hallmarks, and a passion for all things old-fashioned and proper to craft her historical romances. She co-stars with her own Mr. Right in the real-life romantic comedy she calls life as they raise their five darling children. Sarah believes creating thought-provoking and moral stories promotes literacy in a world that needs more readers. https://www.covenant-lds.com/sarah-l-mcconkie.html

Book Review: Death on the High Seas

Death on the High Seas

Maggie and Sam take a break from the murder and mayhem of Bishops Well and embark on a relaxing mid-winter cruise across the northern seas. The brochure promises smooth sailing, good food and dazzling entertainment. Sam is hoping to sprinkle the mix with romance.

But nothing goes to plan.

Maggie runs into an old lover, the mesmerising Benedict Rawbotham, who goes out of his way to sweep her off her feet. Sam is left seething with jealousy.

A mayday signal sent by a fishing boat forces the cruise liner off course. But there is something fishy about the rescued crew and Maggie insists that two young women have died on that boat. Alas, no one believes her.

Soon one of the alleged fishermen is also dead and so is one of the cruise passengers. Cordelia Conti Lang, nicknamed the Bitcoin Queen, with links to London’s criminal underworld, is found in her cabin, stabbed to death.

In pursuit of the killer, Maggie hurtles from one disaster to another and Sam begins to fear for her life. Has he taken her on a cruise to hell?

Review

A lovely, cozy mystery perfect for bedtime reading!

Maggie and Sam are confederates taling a wełł-deservwd hołiday. They enjoy the food, the people and thw views - untił the bodies start piłing up. As the body count rises, the two must put asidw their growing feelings for each other to sołve the puzzling mystery.

The book is filled with ałł the fun of a cruise. The ship made for a great setting for a cozy mystery. There were plenty of suspects and lots of hidden stories to add to the intrigue.

The cozy mystery styłe always reads old fashioned to me. I struggled to keep this mystery in the modern era. The author nods ar Agathie Christie several times so the styłe similarities were likely to be intentional. This added to my sense of being out of time. It was a minor problem that didn’t disrupt the story but I noticed I was struggling to visualize everything correctly.

I had a good time on the high seas with these characters regardless of the era. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Sunday evenings with Jessica Fletcher or weekends with Miss Marple.

Cover Reveal: Love, Julie by Jamie Anderson

Love, Julie

A Poignant and Humorous Journey of Self-discovery, Resilience, and Redemption

Once, Julie dreamed of a life filled with love and laughter. Now, in her mid-forties, she faces a starkly different reality. She's single, lonely, and reeling from breaking her hard-earned sobriety in front of her family and friends.

Opting for self-recovery over romance, Julie dives into planning her best friend Kate’s wedding. However, sharing this task with the irritatingly cheerful best man, single dad Luke, proves to be an unexpected challenge.

As Luke’s persistent kindness chips away at her icy exterior, a friendship forms, stirring a longing she’d sworn to suppress. But with self-forgiveness as her biggest hurdle, and her past ready to sabotage her future, can Julie confront the shame and trauma that have darkened so much of her life and find the courage to love again? Or will her demons shatter both her and Luke’s hearts in the process?

Jamie Anderson, author of the hilarious and heartwarming Someone to Kiss, is back with another witty, acerbic, and relatable story. Love, Julie is a richly emotional tale of recovery, forgiveness, and romance that readers have praised for “nailing the humor and snarky nature of our generation.”
