Review: A Cask of You

All Bea wants is to fly to Scotland and write her steamy new book. Find a smoking hot Scotsman to model the hero on. She can do no-strings, in the name of art, right?

But Bea hasn’t met Cal Butler. Yet…

Bea Gracie, an American romance writer, flees to Edinburgh to escape her broken heart and find inspiration for her fictional love interest. And there he is – the stunning-yet-aloof Cal Butler – in the same Edinburgh coffee shop where Bea is tapping at her laptop. All she has to do is orchestrate a meet-cute and her muse is hers.

Drawn inexorably to each other, Bea and Cal agree to a no-strings fling so they can revel in guiltless passion with a firm end date. But Bea’s feelings for Cal grow like the wildflowers along the coastline of his homeland. Is it possible he harbours feelings for her, too, or is the fire in his kiss something he can safely pack away? And what will happen when this privacy-guarding hero finds out he’s been immortalised in Bea’s spicy novel?

If you love being transported along cobblestone streets and Scottish shores to meet Celtic heroes, then this steamy, contemporary Scottish romance is for you. Discover this passionate new series and fall hard for the Butlers.

Review

Bea and Cal undertake a very modern path to romance in this romantic Scottish tale. The book focuses on the idea that love may be just one more relationship away - as both are dealing with leaving past lovers to pursue new partners. Bea is a frustrated writer working as a barkeep to pay the bills. She realizes that unbelievably-hot and well-endowedCal would make the perfect romantic hero in her stories. She just needs to get more intimate details. Bea got the lion’s shareI did like Cal. I wanted more of the book to focus on him as a person and not just a lover. I felt like there was a lot of unexplored territory beyond the bedroom. But that’s not really the point of romance novels. This one was very reminiscent of Harlequin novels - the leads are attractive, the lines can be funny, and the couple earns their happily ever after.

The book is very modern. Alcohol and steamy s*x figure in prominently. The s*x is gritty and frequent. The romance largely depends on their runaway desire for each other. Those who loved the style of 50 Shades of Grey are likely to love this author.

Review:

I’m very excited to share this book with all of you. This young, first-time author has really worked his craft to release a book that will hold the attention of mid-grade and older readers. The monsters were my favorite part. While based in mythology, the gods and monsters have been reimagined in clever and intriguing ways. The artwork was commissioned and matches the story so well.

Lovers of Rick Riordan will be begging for more from this newcomer. Jaxon ran a very successful Kickstarter campaign to bring this novella to life. He has a promising career as a storyteller and writer.

Review: The Heartpine Recipes

It’s more than southern storytelling. It’s southern storytelling with a side of biscuits.

When Grace Collier comes back to Heartpine, Tennessee, she's thinking about endings. The end of  her job. The end of her engagement. Instead, she finds a new beginning. A journey of discovery that  will reconnect her to her home place…as well as her own past.

Like so many southern tales, this one starts out in the kitchen. Grace’s Aunt Jess – the wise, loving  woman who raised her after her parents passed – is collecting recipes for a new community  cookbook. It’s not long before Grace finds herself an honorary member of the cookbook committee;  and next thing she knows, she’s busy gathering up all the rich stories that come with those recipes.  All the surprises, all the mysteries, all the memories. Along the way, she gets to know a townful of  unforgettable characters. Stirs up a few old secrets. And comes to terms, finally, with her own legacy  of loss.

It’s about the recipes, yes. But more than that, it’s about the relationships. It’s a journey that links  families and generations. A journey of homecoming and redemption.

And just for fun, every chapter includes an iconic southern recipe – so you can cook them up yourself  and see what all the fuss is about. From cornbread to collards, from pulled pork to pineapple  casserole, you’ll find them here. There’s even a never-fail recipe for the best sweet tea you’ve ever  tasted (not that a true southern cook would need a recipe for that, heaven knows!).

Touching, positive and uplifting, The Heartpine Recipes is a generous serving of warmth, humor and  heart.

Review

This book was a lovely, heart-felt narrative of life in small town southern America. The narrative blends second and third person so well that it feels as if you're sitting in the kitchen, listening to this story as you share some award-wining apple crisp.

At the heart of the novel is open woman's search for her future among the memories of the past--particularly, the food memories of her past. She is helping to create a town cookbook and, through it, exploring who she has become and who she hopes emerges from this time of introspection.

The recipes were my favorite characters. They showed how the foods we eat and the way we approach food creates culture and community. The selected recipes look delicious and ready to hop off the page. This book is a fast, pleasant read for lovers of food and anthropology as it shows how much of our lives is shaped by the recipes we hold dear.

Author Bio:

You’ve probably read some of L.C. Fields’s writing, somewhere along the line. That’s because L.C. has  spent a couple of decades at ad agencies, writing for a few of the great icon brands. Some of that  experience is baked into L.C.’s fiction.

L.C. lives in rural Southwest Virginia – about an hour’s drive from the imagined town of Heartpine – off a winding gravel road. It’s a grand place to listen to the wind, watch the animals (including one  ridiculously cute Kerry Blue Terrier) and soak up inspiration.

The Heartpine Recipes is L.C.’s first (published) novel.

Review

What a delightful book! My daughter and I read it together. She has recommended it to all her friends. The story encapsulates so much of what young ones love - animals, mermaids, adventures and friends. The chapters were perfect for short attention spans. It’s written at the right reading level so that my young daughter and I could take turns reading aloud. We had so much fun with this book. I am eager to find more of this author’s works!
